A449 crash: Pedestrian hit and killed by car on busy Wolverhampton road
The man, who was 62, was hit and seriously injured on the A449 Stafford Road between Wolverhampton[1] city centre and the M54 at around 6am on Saturday (January 10), West Midlands Police[2] said. Emergency services were called to near the junction with Bee Lane and Wobaston Road but despite the best efforts of members of the public and paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the driver of the car stayed at the scene.
A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with the collision and later released under investigation.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We are investigating after a pedestrian died after being hit by a car on A449 Stafford Road, Wolverhampton earlier today. "We understand he was struck by a blue VW car, with the driver remaining at the scene. A 30-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive due to drink or drugs, has been released under investigation.
"Our enquiries, such as speaking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage, are ongoing as we work to establish the full circumstances. "The carriageway travelling into the city from the M54 junction was shut off between Springfield Lane and Bee Lane as a forensic examination was carried out. The road re-opened just after 12pm."

Photo: Tim ThursfieldDetective Sergeant Richard Evans from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "Our focus at this awful time is to establish exactly what has happened, and to offer support. "We would like to thank members of the public who stopped to assist at the scene and we are continuing our enquiries to determine the full circumstances of this incident.
"This is a busy road into Wolverhampton city centre and we are asking anyone who was in the area at the time, who we have not yet spoken with, to get in contact with us."
