A pedestrian has died and a man has been arrested following a crash on a main road.
The 62-year old man was found seriously injured by police at 06:15 GMT on the A449 Stafford Road near the junction with Bee Lane and Wobaston Road in Wolverhampton.
Members of the public and paramedics attempted to help, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, West Midlands Police said.
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive due to drink or drugs, and has been released under investigation.
The carriageway travelling into the city from the M54 junction was shut off while a forensic examination was carried out, and reopened just after midday.
The force said the man was understood to have been struck by a blue Volkswagen car, whose driver remained at the scene.
Anyone with information or footage has been asked to contact West Midlands Police.
