M1 traffic chaos LIVE after HGV crashes off motorway

An HGV has careered off the carriageway on a busy section of motorway causing long delays to traffic in the area. All traffic was held on the M1 due to an accident, traffic monitoring system Inrix reported. The incident took place on the M1 southbound, at junction 35 on the A629 Cowley Hill, Rotherham..

Traffic came to a halt at 11am this morning with the entry slip road at junction 35 is also closed. Motorists have been asked to avoid the area while emergency crews work at the scene of the HGV crash. Follow below for the latest updates.

Crash won't be cleared until after 9pm

The event on the entry slip is now expected to clear between 21:15 and 21:30, National Highways said.

All lanes open on M1

National Highways has said that all lanes are now open on the M1 southbound.

Normal traffic conditions are expected between 15:00 and 15:15. The entry slip at J35 remains closed southbound, the event is expected to clear between 19:45 and 20:00.

Traffic england has said that the incident on the slip road will not be cleared until 6.30pm - 6.45pm. The same estimate is being given for the lane closure on the M1 southbound.

National highways has now said the incident is expected to clear between 4:30pm and 4:45pm, and hour longer than previously stated.

There are currently still delays of 30 minutes against expected traffic, the alerts service said.

When will the crash be cleared?

National Highways is reporting both lanes closed on the M1 southbound entry slip at junction J35 due to an "accident involving a vehicle that has left the carriageway". The event is currently expected to clear between 2:15pm and 2:30pm with normal traffic conditions returning around the same time. The M1 southbound between junctions J35 and J34 also currently has one of four lanes closed and there are currently delays of 30 minutes against expected traffic.

The event is expected to clear between 3:30pm and 3:45pm today.

Traffic chaos on three-mile stretch

M1 Southbound entry slip road closed, long delays due to accident, a lorry which has left the carriageway involved at J35 A629 Cowley Hill (Rotherham / Chapeltown). Congestion to J36 (Barnsley South/ Hoyland). Lane one (of four) is closed on the main carriageway after the road was blocked for around forty minutes.

The entry slip remains closed.

Police responding to HGV crash

South Yorkshire Police said: "We are currently responding to reports of an HGV leaving the carriageway on the M1 southbound near J35.

"The southbound carriageway is currently closed, and motorists are asked to avoid the area."
