Mum calls for tougher sentencing after fatal M6 crash

Kim Morgan, originally from Lancaster, lost her 14-year-old son Ryan Liam Morgan on Easter Sunday last year. Ryan was travelling as a front-seat passenger in a Peugeot van driven by his father, Daniel Burba, when the vehicle left the southbound carriageway of the M6 between junctions 34 and 33 and crashed into a tree. Burba, who had never passed a driving test, suffered an epileptic seizure at the wheel. It later emerged he had ignored repeated medical advice not to drive and had cocaine in his system at the time of the crash. Blood tests showed he was four times over the legal drug-driving limit.

Ryan suffered fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. A court later heard the teenager died "in terror" as he attempted to control the vehicle moments before impact.

Burba, 31, of Arnside Crescent, Morecambe, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence and having no insurance.

He was jailed for 10 years, disqualified from driving for more than 14 years, and ordered to take an extended re-test if he ever drives again. Daniel Burba (Image: Lancashire Police) Speaking through tears in a TikTok video, Kim said: "When Daniel was sentenced, he was given 10 years but I've been told that he'll be out in six years on parole, which is nothing.

It's no justice for Ryan at all. "Ryan would have been 20 when Daniel is walking around, starting again." She added: "The only way to get Ryan justice is to get the law changed.

It will be called Ryan Liam's Law."

Kim has launched a petition calling for tougher minimum sentences and permanent driving bans for offenders who kill while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or while uninsured or unlicensed.
