Pedestrian Seriously Injured In Newport Road Collision In Lake

Drivers faced significant delays in Lake on Thursday afternoon (January 8) following a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Newport Road.

The incident happened near the pedestrian crossing between the Lamorbey Road and Manor Road junctions at around 4pm.

Emergency services, including paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, attended the scene to treat those involved.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary closed Newport Road in both directions between Lamorbey Road and Manor Road, with an additional closure in place at the Merrie Gardens roundabout.

Motorists were diverted via Green Lane, and drivers were advised to avoid the area where possible.

Southern Vectis confirmed that Route 8 buses were diverting via Whitecross Lane and Green Lane during the closure.

Police later confirmed that a female pedestrian sustained a serious leg injury after being struck by a silver Suzuki SX4 on the zebra crossing.

The vehicle suffered damage to its bonnet as a result of the impact.

The collision occurred in difficult driving conditions, with torrential rain, strong winds and fading light reported at the time.

No arrests were made.

The casualty was taken to St Mary's Hospital for further assessment and treatment, while police cordoned off the scene pending a medical update to determine whether the investigation would be escalated to the Collision Investigation Unit.

Newport Road reopened in both directions at around 8.15pm.
