Man dies after being hit by car - full West Midlands Police statement

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We are investigating after a pedestrian died after being hit by a car on A449 Stafford Road, Wolverhampton earlier today (Sat). "Officers attended at 6.15am and found the 62-year-old man seriously injured near the junction with Bee Lane and Wobaston Road. "Despite the best efforts of members of the public and then paramedics, the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"We understand he was struck by a blue VW car, with the driver remaining at the scene. A 30-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive due to drink or drugs, has been released under investigation. "Our enquiries, such as speaking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage, are on-going as we work to establish the full circumstances.

"The carriageway travelling into the city from the M54 junction, was shut off between Springfield Lane and Bee Lane as a forensic examination was carried out. The road re-opened just after 12pm." Det Sgt Richard Evans from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, added: "Our focus at this awful time, is to establish exactly what has happened, and to offer support.

"We would like to thank members of the public who stopped to assist at the scene and we are continuing our enquiries to determine the full circumstances of this incident. "This is a busy road into Wolverhampton city centre and we are asking anyone who was in the area at the time, who we have not yet spoken with, to get in contact with us."
