A5 crash live updates as incident causes major spillage and closes off road

A section of the A5 in Leicestershire is set to remain closed overnight in both directions following a collision. Leicestershire Police[1] were called at 11.41am today (Monday, February 9) to a report of a collision involving a car and lorry on the A5, close to Smockington Lane. The driver of the lorry was not injured, and the driver of the car has been taken to hospital as a precaution, but is not believed to have suffered any serious injuries.

A 44-year-old man was arrested at the scene. The northbound and southbound carriage of the A5, near to Smockington Lane, is to remain closed while the vehicles are recovered, and the road is resurfaced. This clean-up operation will be completed overnight, according to National Highways.

Diversions have been put in place by National Highways, while police have urged drivers to avoid the area.
