Basildon fuel tanker driver arrested after fatal A10 crash

Cambridgeshire Police said that the lorry and an Audi car collided head on on the A10 between Littleport and Ely at about 6.40pm on Thursday. The force said that the driver of the Audi, a 25-year-old woman, and her front seat passenger, a 71-year-old woman, both from Littleport, died at the scene. The lorry driver, a 40-year-old man from Basildon, was checked over by paramedics following the fatal crash but was uninjured.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail until May 10 pending further inquiries, police said The section of road where the crash happened is single carriageway and runs parallel to the village of Chettisham. The HGV left the road and came to rest in a nearby field, while the Audi was pushed 100m further up the road, police said.

The force said the A10 between Ely and Littleport is likely to remain closed for the remainder of Friday. Officers are appealing for information and dashcam footage from anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or the vehicles in the moments leading up to it.
