Casualty cut free after car and van crash closes M1 in Leicestershire

Motorists on the M1 in Leicestershire faced significant delays[1] after a collision involving a car and a van brought the northbound carriageway to a standstill near Junction 19. Leicestershire Police[2] arrived at the scene shortly before 9am, close to the M6 Catthorpe Interchange, with officers urging drivers to avoid the area. Highways England said that fire crews attended and extracted one casualty from a vehicle, with ambulance crews also in attendance.

To assist emergency services, the closure was later extended back to Junction 18. No details on injuries if any have been released. Three miles of congestion built up on approach to the closure, with National Highways warning of delays of 30 minutes above normal travel times.

Traffic was first brought to a standstill at around 9.06am.
