Dangerous driver crashes in Cwmbran after Gwent Police chase

Dwayne Zungunde, aged 23, was pursued by officers after he failed to stop for them on Newport Road in Pontypool last week on Wednesday, January 28. The learner driver was driving a black Volkswagen Golf while uninsured. Angharad Jones, prosecuting, told Newport Magistrates' Court that after crashing the vehicle, he failed to provide a specimen for analysis.
The defendant, of no fixed abode, Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly was locked up for eight months. Zungunde was disqualified from driving for 28 months and ordered to pay a statutory ?187 victim surcharge and ?85 costs. He will be banned until he's passed an extended test.
A Gwent Police spokesperson said officers from the Roads Policing and Specialist Operations (RSPO) unit spotted the defendant at around 12.30pm. They added: "The black Volkswagen Golf came to a halt when it collided with a lorry and a car while attempting to overtake queuing traffic on the near-side of the A4042 in Cwmbran after reaching speeds of around 100mph." PC Nathan Ford, the officer in the case, said: "The footage we gathered was clear and overwhelming and proved the defendant had been driving in a dangerous manner; he is very fortunate that no-one was injured.
"He had little option but to plead guilty to the charges he faced in court and I hope that Zungunde now has time to reflect on his actions from last week.
"He did not drive to the required competent standard and his poor decision-making on our roads could have led to devastating consequences.
"This is a reminder to everyone who gets behind the wheel - you must be property insured, hold a valid driving licence, and are responsible for the safety of everyone around you."
