Disruption warning as major M8 bridge project enters fourth phase

Phase four of the ?9 million project, undertaken by Amey for Transport Scotland[1], began on Friday, February 13, and is set to last until Sunday, March 8. The essential works are being delivered over five phases and include repairs and upgrades to four key bridge structures, addressing vehicle parapets, structure waterproofing, safety barriers, and carriageway surfacing. Phase four is taking place under a 2+2 contraflow and involves overnight closures of the M8 Junction 26 eastbound on-slip road for the duration, as well as the overnight closures of the M8 Junction 26 westbound off-slip road and the Junction 25A westbound off-slip road.

Overnight traffic wishing to use the Junction 26 on-slip road is being directed to follow Hillington Interchange to Renfrew[2] Road, Shieldhall Road, and Helen Street to join the M8 eastbound at the Junction 24 (Helen Street Interchange) on-slip road. Motorists warned after crash sparks 50 min delays near Edinburgh[3] Major trunk road heading north closed by fire near village[4]

Drivers warned ahead of carriageway improvement works on A9[5] 'Our traffic lights are in trouble - time for a roundabout revolution'[6] All traffic wishing to use Junction 26 from south of the Interchange is being directed to follow Hillington Road to Paisley[7] Road West, Helen Street, and then join the M8 eastbound via Junction 24 (Helen Street Interchange) on-slip road.

For eight nights (from February 25 o March 5), J25a and J26 require a closure at the same time along with closure of the westbound carriageway. During this period the secondary westbound carriageway will require a closure, with traffic instructed to leave the M8 westbound via J23 and follow Paisley Road West, to Hillington Interchange where the diversion will end and vehicle join on to the M8 carriageway. The contraflow lane will remain open on the M8 for all vehicles travelling westbound.

J24 and J25 westbound off-slips will remain open but both on-slips require a closure along with the J25a and J26 westbound off-slips. Vehicles shall follow the same diversion for the secondary carriageway via Paisley Road West to access the M8 westbound carriageway with closure of J24 and J25 on-slips. For the closure of J25a and J26, off slip traffic will be instructed to continue to the westbound M8 Junction 27 off slip, take 4th exit at roundabout and follow Renfrew Rd northbound to the next roundabout to join the M8 eastbound and exit to re-join the M8 westbound.

Meanwhile, traffic for the M8 Junction 25A westbound off-slip road will be instructed to continue on the M8 westbound and will exit via the Junction 26 off-slip road onto the Hillington Interchange, from here traffic will turn right onto Hillington Road. Traffic will then join King's Inch Road to be diverted right onto Old Govan Road, where diversion will end. When J26 is closed at the same time vehicles will follow same diversion as above for J26 westbound off-slip closure.

A 40mph speed limit remains in effect throughout the project's duration, with average speed cameras in operation.
