A lane closure will remain in place on a stretch of the M62 [1]for a second day after a HGV fire.

The blaze out at around 5.55am on Tuesday morning (February 10) on the eastbound side of the motorway. All traffic was initially stopped[2] between junction 18 for Simister Island and junction 19 for Heywood[3] as emergency crews responded.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze as police cordoned off the area. Traffic was then released, but two lanes remained shut off throughout much of the day yesterday. Advertisement

Long delays of more than two hours then built up, with queues stretching back onto the M60[5]. A lane was reopened in the afternoon leaving one lane shut on the scene.

National Highways said resurfacing works are required on the motorway after the fire.

The works were due to be carried out overnight from Tuesday into today (Wednesday) but 'could not be completed', the road agency said in an update this morning.

"Unfortunately, resurfacing works couldn't be completed so the lane closure will remain throughout today with the works taking place overnight tonight (11/02)."
