Part-time officer and full-time lorry driver uses vehicle to shield injured driver on the M6

Officer with Lancashire Constabulary intervenes in Staffordshire. A part-time volunteer police officer - and full time lorry driver - potentially helped save a life on the M6. The Lancashire Constabulary officer, who police only identified as Alex, was on the M6 in Staffordshire on Thursday evening (26 February) in his role as a HGV driver when he came across a car crashed into the central reservation and facing traffic.
The man involved was still in the driver's seat and traffic was reportedly passing 'extremely close' to the crashed vehicle. Alex used his wagon to shield the driver before calling 999 and requesting police and highways assistance. He then moved his wagon and relocated the driver to his truck cab. A spokesperson for police said: "On Thursday evening whilst working in his full time role as a HGV Driver, S/SGT Alex came across a vehicle that had just crashed into the central reservation and was stationary in the 3rd lane facing oncoming traffic on the M6 in Staffordshire. "As the driver was still sat in the drivers seat, S/SGT Alex protected the driver with his wagon before calling 999 and requesting immediate police and highways assistance as traffic was still travelling extremely close to the crashed vehicle. "S/SGT Alex then moved his wagon behind the car, got the driver out of the crashed vehicle, provided initial first aid and moved him to the safety of the truck cab before trying to alert oncoming traffic of the danger, which was positioned precariously on a bend. "After around 10 minutes, officers from Staffordshire Police and National Highways arrived to close the motorway until the vehicle and driver had been moved to a safer location. "Special Constables, like our regular colleagues, are never 'off duty' and will always work to keep people safe."
