Pictures show A303 crash aftermath with smashed lorry and debris

A major A-road[1] has been damaged after a lorry overturned whilst carrying fruit and vegetables this morning (Saturday, February 21). The incident, on the A303[2] between the A350 at Chicklade and the B3092 at Mere, has closed the A303 in both directions. National Highways said the vehicle struck the nearside barrier, causing it to overturn and rest on its side, damaging a "substantial stretch" of the barrier with the lorry also suffering "significant damage".

A diesel spill has been reported which will need to be treated before the A303, which closed before 8am, can reopen. Photos from the scene show the lorry resting on its side as well as debris and mud over the road. Recovery of the vehicle is underway as specialist recovery teams are likely to include cranes.

Diversion routes are in place for motorists at this time as National Highways warned that the closure would be in place "for some time". To read a summary of all we know so far, click here[3]. Alternatively, read our live blog for the latest updates[4].
