A front seat passenger died when the car's driver lost control on a slight bend and crashed into a stone wall, a coroner has been told.

Ashton Tomes, 19, from Holmfirth, died at Leeds General Infirmary on February 11, two days after the crash on Sheffield Road at Jackson Bridge near Holmfirth[1].

Bradford Coroners' Court[2] outlined the basic details of the crash as the inquest into Ashton's death began.

The court heard that CCTV evidence had shown that three vehicles had been travelling "in convoy" northbound on the A616 before the crash.

The car in which Ashton was a front seat passenger - a Skoda Fabia - crashed after the driver had lost control while navigating a "slight right hand bend".

The car had spun, crossed onto the opposite carriageway and struck a stone wall of a gatehouse, the hearing was told.

Ashton was removed from the severely damaged car and taken to hospital with serious head injuries, reports Yorkshire Live[4].

Despite intensive treatment, his life could not be saved.

He died on the morning of February 11, reports Yorkshire Live.

The hearing was told that Ashton worked as a mechanic, lived in Holmfirth and was born in Huddersfield.

The provisional cause of his death was head injuries caused by a road traffic collision.

Assistant coroner Charlotte Keighley suspended the coronial investigation for six months at the request of West Yorkshire Police, which is carrying out an investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
