Teenager dies after car in Holmfirth convoy crashes into stone wall

View ImageA motorist lost control and collided with a stone wall, inflicting fatal injuries on his front seat passenger, after navigating a "slight" bend in the road, a coroner has heard.
Ashton Tomes, 19, of Holmfirth, died at Leeds General Infirmary on February 11, two days after the collision on Sheffield Road at Jackson Bridge, near Holmfirth. The brief circumstances of the collision were outlined at Bradford Coroners' Court[1] as an inquest was opened into Ashton's tragic death.
The court heard that CCTV evidence had revealed that three vehicles had been travelling "in convoy" northbound on the A616 before the crash.
The car in which Ashton was a front seat passenger - a Skoda Fabia - crashed after the driver had lost control after navigating a "slight right hand bend", reports Yorkshire[2] Live.
The car had spun, crossed onto the opposite carriageway and struck a stone wall of a gatehouse, the hearing was told.

Ashton was removed from the severely damaged car and taken to hospital with serious head injuries.
Despite intensive treatment, his life could not be saved.
He died on the morning of February 11.
The hearing was told that Ashton worked as a mechanic, lived in Holmfirth and was born in Huddersfield.

Assistant coroner Charlotte Keighley paused the coronial investigation for six months following a request from West Yorkshire Police, which is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The case is due to be listed before the coroner on August 26, when a further update from police is anticipated.
