Three thugs jailed after ‘brutal and savage’ blade attack on man in Motherwell

Three thugs have been jailed after a "brutal and savage" blade attack on a man in Motherwell[1].
Alan McFadyen, Ryan Maguire and Jordan McCluskey piled out of a Jaguar car and chased the victim, who suffered 14 slash and stab wounds.
Hamilton Sheriff Court [2]heard the vehicle then crashed on the M74 and McFadyen tried to rob two motorists who stopped to help.
McFadyen, 40, was jailed for 40 months while Maguire, 42, was sentenced to two years in prison and McCluskey, 37, was handed a 32-month stretch. Advertisement Advertisement

All three admitted assaulting the man to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement in Logans Road, Motherwell, on May 23 last year.
McFadyen also admitted threatening motorists with a knife and trying to rob them of their cars.
Katie Allen, prosecuting, said the victim had arranged to meet Maguire and was outside his home waiting for him at about 11.40pm.
She told the court: "A black Jaguar pulled up on Logans Road and four men got out.

"They began to chase the victim, shouting, 'you owe me f*****g money'.
"They were joined in the chase by Maguire and the fourth man.
"Eventually the victim fell and the accused caught up with him.
"While he was on the ground McFadyen and McCluskey attacked him with the machete and knife.
"He was struck repeatedly on the head, back and hands.
Residents heard him shouting for help and the accused began to run back towards the Jaguar."

He was taken by ambulance to hospital. His wounds were closed with stitches.
The Jaguar then crashed on the motorway, near the Motherwell/Hamilton[5] junction.
The carriageway was blocked as a result.
Two other drivers, including an off-duty female police officer, stopped to help only to be confronted by McFadyen brandishing a blade.
He asked the officer for a lift to Glasgow but when she saw the knife she ran away.
He chased her, demanding her keys, then scratched the bodywork of her car with the blade as he tried unsuccessfully to start the vehicle.

Ms Allen said the assault on the man was captured on CCTV and the three accused were arrested at various points over the following months.
Defence lawyer Desmond Ziolo, representing McFadyen, said the accused men and the victim were friends who had been drinking and taking drugs on the day of the attack.
There had been a fallout over a "nominal" sum of money.
Mr Ziolo added: "What followed was utter madness, utter stupidity. It's embarrassing that matters escalated as they did."
Scott Jones, for Maguire, said the intention had been for him and the victim to meet and sort things out.
What developed was "ridiculous".
He stressed that Maguire, though involved in the chase, hadn't used a weapon. Advertisement Advertisement

Tony Borland, representing McCluskey, conceded his behaviour had been "reprehensible", but pointed out the victim's injuries weren't life-threatening.
Passing sentence, Sheriff John Speir told the trio: "This was a brutal and savage assault that can't be condoned in any circumstances."
