Woman killed and two arrested after van overturns en route to North Wales

A 24-year-old woman was tragically killed when a white Ford Transit van overturned after leaving the road. Following the incident two men were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The crash happened on the A534 near Farndon on the Wales-England border. The van was travelling towards North Wales at the time, said Cheshire Police.

Officers were called to the scene at 5.50am on Saturday, February 14, following reports of a collision on the A534 at Barton, a small village eight miles east of Wrexham [1].

Also attending were three crews from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, which said the van had "left the highway and overturned onto a field". Advertisement Advertisement

Firefighters used extrication equipment to access the vehicle and release the woman passenger. She was treated by paramedics but was sadly pronounced dead at the scene

The driver, a 27-year-old man, and a second passenger, a 21-year-old man, were both taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

They were subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The A534 between Farndon and Barton was shut both ways for around five hours. North Wales Police [3] had urged drivers to avoid the area.

Sgt Amy Hollis of Cheshire's Roads and Crime Unit, said inquiries were underway to establish exactly what happened

She said: "We are currently investigating the full circumstances of this sad incident.

Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the woman who has sadly died.

"As part of our enquiries, we would like to hear from any witnesses who have not already spoken to police.
