A14 near Ipswich reopens 18 hours after lorry crash

Emergency services were called to the incident between Copdock and Claydon around 7.35pm on Tuesday. The road was closed in both directions before the eastbound carriageway reopened shortly after midnight. The westbound carriageway between Sproughton and Whitehouse remained closed for several hours[1] on Wednesday to allow for vehicle recovery and for National Highways to assess the condition of the road following an oil spillage.

There were rush hour delays on Wednesday morning (Image: A14 traffic cameras) One lane reopened just over 18 hours after the crash took place. Lane one will remain closed between junction 53 for Whitehouse and junction 52 for Claydon for overnight resurfacing work.

One of the lorry drivers, a man aged in his 60s, sustained serious injuries[2] in the crash. He had to be freed by the fire service after becoming mechanically trapped in his vehicle. He was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The other driver, a man aged in his 40s, sustained minor injuries.
