Police have arrested a 27-year-old after a woman sustained a 'potentially life-changing leg injury' following a smash that left a Staffordshire A-road shut for around 10 hours. Police, firefighters, and paramedics were scrambled to the A519 through Woodseaves where a car had smashed into a lamppost.

National Highways and National Grid were also sent to the scene on Friday night where the road was closed off. Today Staffordshire Police has confirmed an arrest has been made as collision investigators are appealing for witnesses.

The smash occurred at around 9.30pm.

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police said: "Officers attended and a grey Volkswagen Golf was found in collision with a lamppost. West Midlands Ambulance Service, National Highways and Western Power were also on scene.

"A woman, the passenger in the car, was taken to hospital for treatment to a potentially life-changing leg injury. She remains in hospital today (March 17)."

Subsequently a 27-year-old man, of Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit.

He has been released on conditional bail as an investigation continues.

The spokeswoman added: "Specialist investigators are asking witnesses, or anyone with relevant dashcam, or CCTV footage, of a grey Volkswagen Golf travelling along the A519 from Newport to Woodseaves in the time leading up to the collision at around 9.25pm, to get in touch."

Witnesses should call 101 and quote incident 781 of March 13.
