Crash closes A38 at Saltash

Everything we know after 'serious' crash closed A38 at Saltash:

1. A "serious" crash[1] involving a lorry and a car closed the A38[2] in both directions this afternoon (Wednesday, March 25). The eastbound carriageway at Saltash[3] was shut for hours as all three emergency services attend.
2. Devon and Cornwall Police[4] said the crash happened at 3.50pm, close to the entrance of Saltash Tunnel. The incident involved two vehicles - a car and a lorry.
3. Crews from the ambulance service, police, fire service and an air ambulance were deployed the scene.

   One man was being treated by paramedics as of 5pm.

4. The A38 was closed in the eastbound direction at Carkeel Roundabout. The westbound carriageway also closed to allow the air ambulance to land, but had reopened by 5.45pm.

5. Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said crews from from Saltash, Camels Head and Bodmin responded, with "one casualty released from a vehicle using crash rescue equipment".

6. The incident caused long delays within the area as motorists faced disruption during rush hour and beyond.

7. National Highways advised motorists via X at 5.30pm: "The A38 in Cornwall is CLOSED in both directions between the B3271 at Saltash and the A388 at Carkeel due to a serious collision involving a lorry and a car. All emergency services are in attendance.

   There are long delays in the area. More information to follow shortly."

8. In a update 15 minutes later, it confirmed the closure had been lifted on the westbound side only, reporting: "The A38 in Cornwall is now only closed eastbound between the A388 at Carkeel and the B3271 at Saltash. Traffic is being diverted off just before the Saltash Tunnel, heading onward to the bridge.

   There are long delays on approach."

9. The eastbound side has also since reopened, with delays clearing by 7.45pm, according to traffic logs.

   Emergency services have been contacted for further information.
