Two individuals have tragically lost their lives after being struck by trains in separate incidents
- One person was hit between Durham and Newcastle on the evening of Monday, March 23, National Rail confirmed.
- The British Transport Police released a statement regarding the incident: "We were called to Durham station shortly after 6.30pm yesterday (Monday) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Officers attended along with paramedics but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
- A second individual was struck by a train between Darlington and Newcastle at Durham on the morning of March 24.
- "Officers were called to Durham railway station at 7.13am today (24 March) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner," confirmed the British Transport Police.
- These incidents caused significant disruption to train services this morning due to a large section of the East Coast Main Line being closed, with services subject to ongoing short notice cancellations and alterations expected to last until midday, reports Chronicle Live[3].
- Durham Station and the railway line reopened just before 10am following these incidents, with disruption between Newcastle and Darlington cleared shortly after 12pm.
- LNER has confirmed that services are resuming normal operations, however, passengers may still be affected by delays, alterations and last-minute cancellations.
