An elderly woman has sadly died after being struck by a car.
Emergency services were called to Lamplugh Road in Cockermouth following reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and pedestrian. The incident happened shortly after 9pm last night (March 14) and the road was closed for several hours for forensic investigation works.
Police said the pedestrian, a woman in her 70s, died at the scene. The driver of the car, a man in his 30s is assisting police, with their investigation.
Officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
In a statement, Cumbria Police said: "We are investigating a road traffic collision involving a car and pedestrian that occurred on Lamplugh Road, Cockermouth.
The collision occurred at 9:09pm yesterday (March 14).
"The pedestrian a woman in her 70s sadly died at the scene. The driver of the car a man in his 30s is assisting police with their investigation.
"The road was closed for a number of hours whilst a forensic collision investigation was carried out. Anyone with information relating to this incident can report online at https://orlo.uk/cJiui[1], quoting incident number 226 of 14 March 2026.
