Live M6 traffic updates as ‘serious’ crash in Cheshire leaves motorway closed

The M6 motorway is closed due to a 'serious' crash in Cheshire tonight (Tuesday, March 3). The northbound carriageway is shut to traffic near the Staffordshire border. The closure is in place between Junction 16 (Crewe/Stoke-on-Trent) and Junction 17 (Sandbach/Congleton).

The incident was first reported at around 7.45pm and the motorway is expected to remain shut until after midnight, with the crash involving a lorry and a van. Click here to prioritise Manchester news in Google from the MEN[1] A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M6 in Cheshire is closed northbound between J16 (Crewe) and J17 (Sandbach) due to a serious collision which occurred shortly before 19:45 this evening.

"Cheshire emergency services are in attendance, along with National Highways Traffic Officers who are in attendance assisting with traffic management. "Collision investigation will be taking place overnight tonight." A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "The M6 Northbound is currently closed between junctions 16 and 17 following a collision between a van and an HGV earlier this evening.

The carriageway isn't expected to reopen until after midnight. Please avoid the area if you can." This is a breaking incident.
