Traffic in both directions is affected due to large diesel spill

Standstill traffic on the M5 northbound after crash and diesel spill

Diversion routes have been shared after a lorry crashed into a central reservation on the M5 in Gloucestershire.

National Highways has confirmed details of the collision involving as single vehicle[1] northbound between junctions 14 and 13 near Stroud.

It has resulted in a large spill of diesel fuel.

All northbound traffic is held.

One lane southbound has also been shut.

The accident was first reported at about 1.50pm today (Sunday, March 29).

National Highways said: "The M5 in Gloucestershire is closed northbound between J14 (Falfield) and J13 (Stroud) due to collision involving a an HGV which has struck the central reservation at approximately 13:40 this afternoon.

"The vehicle's diesel tank has been damaged and has ruptured spilling diesel across all lanes of the carriageway.

"Lane 3 of (3) is also closed on the southbound carriageway due to barrier damage and debris....

"Emergency services including Gloucestershire Police are in attendance.

"National Highways traffic officers are also on scene providing assistance with traffic management with specialist contactors en route to assist with the clean-up of the diesel."

Diversion routes

  • Exit the M5 northbound at J14 and turn left onto the B4509
  • At the junction with the A38, turn right and join the A38 northbound
  • Continue on the A38 northbound, passing through the villages of Cambridge and Claypits, to then re-join the M5 northbound at J13
