M6 closure at Leyland is lifted as forensic examinations continue into pedestrian’s death

Lancashire Police and Cumbria Police are supporting Cheshire Police in a probe which covers three locations on the northbound motorway The closure of the M6 northbound at Leyland has been lifted although a police investigation continues into a death on the motorway. Lancashire Police closed off the motorway at Junction 28 after the death of a pedestrian[1] further south on the motorway.
At 3am on Saturday (7 March) Cheshire Police were called to the M6 at Junction 21 near Warrington to reports a person had been struck by several vehicles. The investigation into the death saw the M6 in Lancashire closed around 6am on Saturday[3], along with the entry slip road onto the M6 at Junction 29 as police needed to collect forensic evidence from the carriageway. Cumbria Police also became involved as a lorry was stopped at Tebay services. The vehicle is understood to have been involved in the crash and forensic examination is needed with a police cordon in place.
"Sadly, the pedestrian was found dead at the scene." National Highways North West lifted the closure of the Junction 28 northbound as of 1.30pm on Saturday and delays have now eased. Delays on the M61 northbound from Chorley at Junction 8 remain, as motorists divert to try and find alternative routes.
The M6 stretch approaching Junction 21A northbound remains closed for investigation works. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Cheshire Police using 101 quoting IML 2284032.
