Man, 34, dies in M6 crash in Cheshire

A van passenger has died in a fatal collision with a crane truck on the M6. It comes as the van driver was taken to hospital after Tuesday night's crash which shut the motorway for hours.

Cheshire Police are investigating the 'tragic incident' that occurred on the northbound carriageway between junctions 16 (Crewe[1]) and 17 (Sandbach/Congleton). Emergency services had been called to reports of a 'serious collision' between a white Renault van and a crane truck just after 7.45pm.

Police say the passenger in the van, a 34-year-old man from the Manchester area, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile the van driver, a 30-year-old man, also from the Manchester area, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Stoke for treatment.

Inspector Andrew Dennison said: "As part of our investigation into the circumstances of this tragic incident, we would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened and has not already spoken to police to get in touch with us. The same goes for anyone who has any CCTV or dashcam footage. Our thoughts remain with the man's family and friends at this sad time."

The motorway reopened at around 3am.

Witnesses should call the constabulary on 101 and quote IML 2281889.
