Motorcyclist in 70 dies in A19 crash as section of road remains closed

A motorcyclist in his 70s has died in a crash on the A19 in North Tyneside this morning (March 11).

Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway of the A-road near Silverlink.

It was reported that a white Ducati Multistrada motorbike had collided with a black Ford Transit van at the start of the slip road to the Tyne Tunnel industrial estate while exiting the A19.

Police have confirmed that the biker, a man in his 70's, died at the scene. Advertisement Advertisement

The man's family have been informed and is being supported by officers.

The driver of the van remained at the scene to assist officers in their enquiries.

A section of the A19 southbound remains closed.

The Force's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) have since launched an investigation and is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Alex Partington of Northumbria Police said: "Firstly, our thoughts remain firmly with the family and loved ones of the man who has tragically lost his life.

"We'll continue to offer them support at this incredibly sad time.

"We know this is an incredibly busy stretch of road with many vehicles passing through.
