"He was passionate about his love for vintage motorbikes and often went out to meet and ride with like-minded friends.

"William was a retired foreman boat builder who served his apprentice and worked at Camper and Nicholsons boatyard in Gosport, where his efforts led him to receiving the British Empire Medal. "He was also a much respected and long-standing member of Hardway sailing[1] club in Gosport. "The family would like to acknowledge all the emergency services and medical staff who helped William.

The family also ask that you respect their privacy at this time." In a Facebook post, Hardway Sailing Club also paid tribute to Mr Shaw. A spokesperson for the club said: "Bill was a much-loved and long-standing member of the club, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

"His family would like to thank everyone for the kind messages and support. They've asked for some privacy at this difficult time, and we kindly ask that everyone respects that." Hampshire Police said the incident involved Mr Shaw's black Velocett motorbike and a grey Audi A3, with both vehicles having travelled behind a large HGV before the collision.
