Update after M4 crash in Wiltshire sparks emergency response

Emergency services were called to the eastbound carriageway of the M4, just before junction 17 at Chippenham, following a crash on the busy motorway during the afternoon of Friday, March 27. A lorry and a Ford Fiesta were involved in the incident, which led to two lanes of the carriageway being closed for over an hour. Traffic was diverted into lane three while emergency services worked at the scene and the vehicles involved were moved to the hard shoulder, leading to delays of nearly an hour.

Police have since confirmed that nobody was seriously injured or arrested during the crash. (Image: National Highways) Suggested reading

"There were no reported serious injuries and no arrests made." Traffic cameras showed long queues forming behind the crash scene, where multiple ambulances could be seen.

At around 5pm National Highways confirmed that the M4 eastbound had been cleared and traffic returned to normal levels some time after this.
