Elderly suffers broken leg after being hit by car on busy Northumberland street

An elderly man was rushed to hospital after being hit by a car in a Northumberland[1] town. Police and paramedics rushed to Station Road in Ashington[2] just after 3.40pm on Thursday afternoon.
Officers say that, for reasons yet to be established, a collision occurred between a man in his 80s and a car.
The male pedestrian sustained a fracture to his leg and was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital[3] in Cramlington[4] for treatment.
He currently remains in hospital in a stable condition. The driver of the car stayed at the scene and continues to assist Northumbria Police[5] with their enquiries.
The force said: "Shortly after 3.50pm on Thursday (April 9), we received a report from the ambulance service of an injured pedestrian on Station Road in Ashington. Emergency services attended where, for reasons to be established, a road traffic collision has occurred between a male pedestrian and a car.
"The man, aged in his 80s, sustained a fracture to his leg and was taken to hospital for further treatment where he remains in a stable condition.
Enquiries into the full circumstances surrounding the report are ongoing."
Article continues belowA police car, a Forensic Collision Investigation Unit police van and two ambulances attended the incident.
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service (NEAS)[6] said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on Station Road, Ashington shortly before 3.40pm on 9 April. We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team. One patient was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital."
