Man airlifted to hospital after car crashes into tree on A64 near York

A man has been airlifted to hospital after his car left the road and crashed into a tree on the A64 near York. The collision happened shortly before 8am on Sunday, April 26, on the A64 eastbound just after the A659 York Road on slip. A silver Honda Jazz left the carriageway and struck a tree.
The sole occupant, a man in his forties from the Leeds area[1], was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary, where he remains in a serious condition. The road was closed for several hours[2] to allow specialist Forensic Collision Investigators to carry out work at the scene, with the eastbound carriageway blocked between the A659 and Bilbrough. Diversions were put in place via Catterton, though police warned the route was not suitable for heavy goods vehicles.
Junction 44 of the A1(M) was also temporarily closed to prevent traffic accessing the A64. The road reopened at around 1.30pm. North Yorkshire Police[3] are now appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.
Anyone who witnessed the collision, saw the vehicle prior to the incident, or has dash cam footage from the area at the time is asked to email [email protected][4] or [email protected][5].
