A crash in involving a HGV on the A1 near Seaton Burn

One person has been taken to hospital following a crash on the A1 which involved a HGV and a bus. Emergency services were called to a stretch of the northbound A1 just south of Junction 80 for Seaton Burn and the A19 at around 4.15pm this afternoon.

The collision caused tailbacks[1] as long as four miles, as well as delays of at least 45 minutes. The HGV blocked both lanes of the carriageway, with the bus appearing to have collided with it.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service[2] confirmed that two vehicles had been sent to the scene to assist with recovery.

The HGV was recovered first, and the bus was then towed off the A1 at around 6pm.

Police earlier advised motorists to find an alternative route where possible.

One person has been taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington[3].

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service[4] said: "We received a call at 4.12pm on Tuesday, April 14 to reports of a road traffic incident on the A1 northbound towards Seaton Burn.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, a crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and a duty officer to the scene.

One patient was taken to NSECH for further treatment."
