The A66 at Cannon Park has been closed in both directions after a crash. Police are asking motorists to avoid the key Middlesbrough[1] dual carriageway.
The incident happened shortly before 12.30pm today and long tailbacks quickly built up on the dual carriageway and surrounding roads.
Cleveland Police[2] initially released a statement saying: "The A66[3] westbound is currently closed at Cannon Park, Middlesbrough, due to a collision. Emergency services are on scene.
Please avoid the area. Thank you for your patience in advance."
Minutes later they released a second statement which read: "The eastbound carriageway is now also closed." One witness, who was on the scene at the time of the incident, told Teesside Live the collision appeared to be between a lorry and a person. He said: "I called the police for it - I saw the lot."
A live map from the AA showed traffic has been brought to a standstill in the area.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A66 westbound in Middlesbrough shortly before 12.30pm this afternoon (9 April).
We dispatched two ambulance crews, a clinical team leader and an officer."
