A crash in a Surrey village saw a man in his 60s airlifted to a London hospital for treatment as Surrey Police[1] have released an appeal to the public for information.

At midday on Thursday, April 2, police attended a collision involving a van and a motorcycle on the A281 Alfold By-Pass[2] near Cranleigh[3], not far from the Dunsfold Aerodrome.

The incident left the road closed for a number of hours, being lifted at 7pm that evening. With Surrey Police telling the public to "avoid the area"[4] while the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) attended to those involved.

This being the rider of the motorcycle, a man in his 60s, who was flown by air ambulance to St George's hospital in Tooting with serious injuries.

Speaking to SurreyLive not long after 3pm that afternoon (April 2), a spokesperson for the ambulance service said[5]: "South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) was called at approximately 11.43am today (02/04/26), following reports of an RTC involving a van and a motorbike on the A281 near Cranleigh.

"Several crews attended the incident, including a critical care paramedic, and were joined at the scene by the Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex along with fire and police services.

"The motorcyclist was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken by air to St George's Hospital in London for further medical treatment."

In an update provided by Surrey Police on Friday, April 3, the force said that the driver of the van, a 24-year-old man from Crawley, had been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

A spokesperson for the police continued its update: "We are appealing for witnesses following a collision in Cranleigh yesterday. Police attended a collision involving a van and a motorcycle on the A281 Alfold By-Pass at around 11.45am on Thursday, April 2.

"Were you in the area between 11.30am and 11.45am?

We are asking anyone who may have witnessed this collision to get in touch.

"We are also seeking CCTV, dashcam, mobile phone or helmet cam footage that may have captured all or part of this incident."
