A woman tragically lost her leg in a horrific incident as she waited by a cashpoint in a car park outside a Tesco[1].

Police and paramedics were called to reports of a serious collision at the car park outside the store in Broken Cross, Macclesfield[2].

The 80-year-old woman had walked up to the cashpoint outside the store where she was directly in front of an Audi A3 being driven by 76-year-old Peter Bowen, who had parked up in the car park.

As Bowen attempted to drive off, his car moved forwards instead of reversing out of the parking space and struck the pensioner. She became trapped between the car and the wall and suffered serious crush injuries to her leg.

The victim was rushed to hospital for treatment and needed surgery following the crash on.

She later had to have her right leg amputated from her knee due to the severity of the injuries.

Following an investigation by the Serious Collision Investigation unit at Cheshire Constabulary, Bowen was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He pleaded not guilty, claiming the incident, on July 29, 2024, was caused by a fault with the vehicle, however he was later found guilty of causing serious injury by careless driving at Crewe Magistrates' Court.

The 76-year-old, of Chelford, appeared at the same court on March 31 where he was handed a GBP4,154 fine and was banned from driving for two years. He will need to pay a further GBP1,662 surcharge and GBP400 in costs, and must pass an extended driving test after his disqualification ends.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "This case shows how dangerous vehicles can be, causing life-changing injuries at very slow speed.

A woman sadly lost a leg during this incident and needed extensive surgery on her other leg.
