Caravan rolls over in horror crash on A40 near Oxford

Emergency services were called to the crash on the eastbound side between Wheatley and the M40 shortly before 7pm on Thursday, May 28. Pictures taken roadside show the smashed up caravan on its roof, detached from the vehicle that was towing it. Firemen were called to help rescue people and traffic[1] officers shut the road in both directions for the rest of the evening.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said on Thursday night: "The A40 between Wheatley and the M40 near Oxford is closed eastbound. "The carriageway is likely to be closed for a number of hours, so we would advise motorists to avoid the area. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

"The closure follows a single vehicle collision, which we are investigating." A spokesman for the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service added: "Due to an ongoing incident, the A40 including the Oxford Spur is currently closed in both directions. "Please expect significant traffic disruption in the area and plan to use an alternative route."

The Oxford Tube service to and from London has also been affected by the closure, which is now in both directions. A spokesman said during the incident: "Due to an accident the A40 is closed in both directions at Wheatley. "All coaches diverting.

All stops will be served but we do expect delays. Apologies for any inconvenience." He later said, just before 1am, that the road had reopened.

Thames Valley Police has been approached for further details. The crash was the second major incident on the A40 in as many days. Just one day before on Wednesday, May 27, a man had died in an incident close to the Headington stretch of the dual carriageway.

Thames Valley Police confirmed a man in his 20s died following reports of a fear for welfare incident, which occurred shortly after 2.45am earlier that night.

Police units and a forensic team were seen late on the morning of the Wednesday while a car was carried away by a truck.
