An HGV driver has died following a crash on the A1 today (Friday). Police said that the single vehicle crash saw the lorry leave the road and come to rest in a ditch.

The driver, believes to be a man in his 50s, was pronounced[1] dead at the scene.

Leicestershire Police said: "A driver has died after a road traffic collision on the A1 near to Great Casterton. Police received a call at 11.18am today (Friday 1 May) following a report that an HGV, which was travelling on the southbound carriageway, had left the road and came to rest in a ditch.

"The driver of the vehicle[2], believed to be a man in his 50s, was sadly pronounced dead[3] at the scene.

No other vehicles are reported to be involved.

"The southbound carriageway between Stamford and Great Casterton remains currently closed and traffic is being diverted.

The northbound was closed and has since been reopened.

"Anyone who may have seen the collision or the moments leading up to it are asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident 234 of 1 May."
