M6 crash as car stolen by ‘men with machete’ and armed police at scene

A man has been detained following a collision on the M6 northbound, police have confirmed.

Officers were alerted to reports that a vehicle had been stolen from West Bromwich by two men armed with a machete.

The car was identified on the M6 northbound between J12 and J13 in Staffordshire at approximately 5am this morning (Thursday, May 14).

It subsequently became involved in a collision with a HGV before two men fled the scene on foot.

Armed officers were dispatched to the scene alongside the National Police Air Service and a dog unit, reports Birmingham Live[3].

The HGV driver was taken to hospital by ambulance, while a second man was examined by paramedics before being arrested.

A section of the M6 was closed following the incident, a Staffordshire Police spokesperson confirmed.

They added: "A man has been arrested by West Midlands Police (WMP) following a collision involving a suspected stolen car on the M6 in Staffordshire this morning (Thursday 14 May).

"We were called at 4.50am by WMP colleagues following reports of a suspicious vehicle.

"A car had been stolen in West Bromwich by two men, reportedly with a machete.

The owner of the car was unhurt in the robbery.

"Our officers spotted the blue Audi S3 on the M6 northbound between junctions 12 and 13.

"The car was then involved in a collision with a HGV, near to Stafford services, with two men making off from the scene on foot.

"Firearms officers were sent to the scene, along with a dog unit and the National Police Air Service.

"The driver of the HGV was taken to hospital by ambulance.

"One man was found and checked over by paramedics before being detained by WMP officers a short time later.

"We assisted in recovery of the vehicles, alongside Highways, and left the scene at around 9am.

"The M6 northbound between junctions 14 for Stafford north and 15 for Stoke-on-Trent south has since reopened.

"Our inquiries are continuing and anyone with relevant information or dashcam footage should call us on 101 quoting incident number 69 of 14 May.
