Man arrested after fatal crash on A46 near Salford Priors

Emergency services were called to the scene between Salford Priors and Oversley Green to a report that a pedestrian had been hit by an HGV in the early hours of Friday morning (May 22). The pedestrian, a man in his 60s, died at the scene. Police believe he had been walking towards his broken down car at the time of the crash.

A 55-year-old man from Cornwall has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody. Warwickshire Police is now investigating the crash and has asked anyone with information or footage to get in touch by contacting them quoting incident 39 of May 22 or reference number 23/21929/26. "Officers were called to the southbound stretch of the A46 between Oversley Green and Salford Priors shortly before 3.45am this morning after receiving a report a pedestrian had been hit by the driver of an HGV lorry," a police spokesperson said.

"The pedestrian - a man in his 60s - was believed to have been walking towards his car, which had broken down. "Sadly, the man died at the scene. His next of kin has been informed and are being supported by our officers.

"A 55-year-old man from Cornwall has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody." The southbound carriageway of the road has been closed for more than eight hours.

Earlier the same morning, a pedestrian in his 80s died following another crash on the A46 between the Thickthorn junction at Kenilworth and the Stoneleigh junction for Coventry.

Warwickshire Police confirmed that the two incidents are unrelated.
