A woman and a dog have died and two men have been arrested - one on suspicion of murder - after a crash on the A1.

Police are trying to piece together the movements of a woman who died following a collision on the northbound lane of the A1 at South Witham

Lincolnshire Police[1] says multiple calls were made to report the collision between a pedestrian and at least one vehicle, a grey Seat Leon, at 9.35pm on Saturday, May 9.

Emergency services arrived at the scene, which was north of the junction for South Witham and Castle Bytham.

A 52-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the investigation and remain in police custody.

A 58-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and a 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

Police have issued a statement about the circumstances before the incident took place which said: "We understand the woman, a man and their dog had left their Vauxhall Corsa parked in a layby north of the Fox Inn on the southbound lane of the A1 and had walked over to the northbound lane.

"It is part of our investigation to determine when or for how long they had been on the northbound side.

"The A1 at South Witham has two lanes both north and southbound.

"Within the locality of the collision are various businesses including Trophy's Cars, OK Diner and a Travelodge. There is a truck stop in the southbound lane around the Fox Inn location."

The police[2] say they want to hear from anyone who saw a broken-down black Vauxhall Corsa in a layby in the southbound lane near the Fox Inn.

They also want to hear from anyone who saw the pedestrians and a dog during the six-hour period between 3.40pm and 9.35pm on the A1 at South Witham.

The police[3] added: "This is an ongoing active investigation and we ask people not to speculate as to the circumstances.

This is unhelpful to all involved, especially family and friends of the victim, who are being assisted by specially-trained officers."

Anyone who can help with dashcam or recalls seeing anyone or anything that may be relevant to the investigation is asked to contact the investigating officer by email at [email protected]
