Coventry man arrested after Bedworth bridge lorry smash

A Coventry man was arrested after a lorry crash that damaged a Bedworth[1] bridge and caused mayhem on train lines.

It happened on Marston Lane at around 3.30pm yesterday, Thursday, June 11.[2] A lorry driver alleged to have hit the bridge reportedly left the scene. A 64-year-old man was arrested less than two hours later.

"At 3.30pm on June 11, we responded to reports of a railway bridge collapse on Marston Lane, Bedworth," a spokesman for Warwickshire[3] Police told Coventry[4] Live. "Train routes over the bridge were stopped by National Rail while the incident was handled.

"Following an alleged collision between the driver of a lorry and the bridge, the driver left the scene without reporting the collision.

"At 5.10pm, a 64-year-old man from Coventry was arrested on suspicion of endangering a railway passenger and failure to stop following a collision."

Fire crews also attended the crash.

A spokesman said: "Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at approximately 3.30pm on Thursday, June 11 to reports of a lorry hitting a railway bridge on Marston Lane, Bedworth, resulting in its collapse.

"Four fire appliances, including a road traffic collision unit, attended the scene from Nuneaton[7], Bedworth and Coleshill. Network Rail and Warwickshire Police[8] were also in attendance.

Fire crews were on scene for about an hour and handed the incident to Network Rail."

The incident caused travel misery for commuters and had knock-on effects around the country when all trains between Nuneaton and Rugby[9] were cancelled.

The line was back open today, Friday, June 12, though passengers were warned it would be a slower than usual service.
