Five people taken to hospital after multi-vehicle collision involving lorry on the A1

Five people have been taken to hospital following a serious crash in Northumberland[1]. A lorry and two other vehicles collided on the A1 near Stannington[2] shortly after 4pm on Wednesday.
The lorry reportedly overturned across both sides of the A1 and police, paramedics and firefighters rushed to the scene. A section of the road has been closed in both directions between Stannington and Seaton Burn in North Tyneside[3].

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) transported five people to hospital with head and body injuries. The patients were taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital[4] in Cramlington[5] and the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)[6] in Newcastle[7].
There were severe delays on the A1 Northbound following the collision. Traffic was backed up all the way to Kingston Park[8] on the northbound carriageway and Morpeth[9] on the southbound carriageway.
The road remains closed in both directions while the emergency services deal with the incident.
Traffic is slow and Northumbria Police[10] has urged motorists to seek an alternative route where possible. Advertisement Advertisement

Emergency services are currently at the scene where a section of the road is currently closed in both directions.
"Motorists are advised to seek an alternative route where possible.
Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
A NEAS[11] spokesperson added: "We were called to a road traffic collision involving a lorry and two vehicles on the A1 at Stannington shortly before 4.10pm on 3 June. We dispatched three double crewed ambulances, a duty officer, a specialist paramedic and a clinical team leader, who treated five casualties before conveying to hospital with head and body injuries."
