Lorry hit M66 barrier near Ramsbottom and Bury this morning
The northbound carriageway and one lane southbound have now reopened on the M66[1] after being closed for a few hours this morning, according to Bury Council[2]. Traffic was at a standstill along the motorway earlier today, Tuesday, June 2, as the M66 Southbound was blocked by a 'jackknifed' lorry that appears to have hit the central barrier. Motorists experienced delays from J1 A56 Walmersley Road (Ramsbottom) to J2 A58 Rochdale Road (Bury) and there was congestion to A56 (Ramsbottom Junction).

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said two fire engines attended the scene. A spokesperson for GMFRS said: "At around 7.10am on Tuesday, June 2, two fire engines from Ramsbottom and Bury fire stations were called to attend a road traffic collision involving one heavy goods vehicle on the M66 southbound between junctions 1 and 2.
"Crews arrived quickly and remain in attendance, working alongside Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe." At around 10am, recovery vehicles on the hard shoulder started to tow the lorry away, and Bury Council[5], via social media, announced that the northbound carriageway and one lane southbound have now reopened. National Highways North West said there was 'significant damage' to the central reservation barrier.
Repairs will be taking place to the central reservation, but it will take time to assess this.
