Mercedes driver on trial claims he has no memory of crash

Darryl Young, of Zakopane Road, Swindon, is on trial at Oxford Crown Court. The 64-year-old is charged with one count of dangerous driving on the A420 at Kingston Bagpuize on June 13, 2023. He has pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The jury previously heard that Young was driving a Mercedes Benz SLK at the time of the alleged offence. The prosecution's case is that Young attempted an overtake on the A420 as the road changes from a duel carriageway to a single carriageway. This led to a head-on collision with a van.

As a result of the crash, the van flipped and rolled several times. Young's car spun right around. Young was taken to hospital and attended a voluntary interview with police.

He told police he couldn't remember the crash. On June 18, the jury heard a transcript read out of Young's police interview. When asked if he was the driver of the car, Young said: "Yes I was.

I can't remember anything about the day. "It was a lovely day. That's the only thing I can remember about the day.

My normal routine is I get coffee from the Esso garage, but I don't even remember that. "A friend came to hospital and showed a picture of my car, that's all I know." "I've been driving that road since 2007, so I'm very familiar.

I have never had a speeding ticket or an accident on that road."

The trial continues.
