Person taken to hospital after van comes off A19 near Yarm

A fleet of emergency services were called to the major road on Sunday (June 14) following a crash between the Yarm and Thornaby turn-offs just after midday. [1] A van is believed to have come off the northbound side and ended up down an embankment - leaving one person trapped inside the vehicle. The Northern Echo understands that the vehicle crashed into what is believed to be a tree.

Firefighters had to free the person from the vehicle - with the North East Ambulance Service confirming that one person was taken to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Their current condition remains unknown. The incident sparked severe delays along the route, with motorists queueing almost as far back as the Crathorne Interchange.

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "We were informed by the ambulance service to say a van had come off the road and possibly hit a tree. "We received the call at 11.54am. Police, ambulance, and fire are in attendance on the northbound side.

"We have two fire engines from Thornaby and one from Coulby Newham at the scene. Extrication is taking place, they are trying to get the person out of the vehicle." A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A19 near Yarm Road, shortly after 11.50am on 14 June.

We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, a clinical team leader, one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team and were supported by the medical car from Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"One patient was taken to James Cook Hospital."
