Traffic held on M25 after serious collision near Godstone

Traffic is being held on the motorway due to a serious collision involving a white van. Drivers along the M25 are currently sat in scorching heat while emergency services, including the air ambulance, attend the scene.

It's due to a collision near Junction 6 for Godstone, but is causing 30 minutes of delays in both directions. At least four police cars, two fire engines and multiple ambulances were called to the crash.

Drivers have been told to expect "significant delays" along the M25/A25 corridor this afternoon, with more than five miles of queues currently. National Highways said: "KSS Air Ambulance are working at the scene. "As soon as the scene is deemed safe, traffic can be released."

It comes as Kent and the south east of England face a red warning for extreme heat, with temperatures expected to reach mid 30 degrees.

One person on social media commented: "Are you able to open the emergency lanes at the Clacket Lane services as the amount of traffic in this heat is a risk to human life."

Other videos showed two people playing football on the empty side of the motorway as others watched on. The following diversions are in place: Diversions in place as follows for the M25 and M26 closures:

At M25 J5 follow onto A21 southbound and use A25 westbound to rejoin M25 at J6. For those using M26, continue on the M20 London bound to J1 and then join the M25 clockwise and follow above diversion route detailed above for J5-J6 traffic. A Surrey Police spokesman said: "Emergency services are currently dealing with a serious road traffic collision involving two vehicles on the M25 clockwise between junctions 6 and 7.

"Motorists can expect lengthy delays in the area due to the closure at J5 to prevent any additional traffic joining, but please do not leave your vehicle if you are between J5-6 as traffic will be moving shortly.

"Traffic is being directed off the main carriageway while emergency services work at the scene.

"Please avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible, allowing extra time for your journey."
