Two arrested over A1 crash as teen remains critical

Officers were called to the major road between Stannington and Blagdon on June 3 after a blue BMW 320 M Sport, a red Seat Leon and a white IVECO lorry collided. [1] The incident, which took place on the southbound stretch shortly after 4.05pm, left a teenager, who was travelling in the BMW, with life-threatening injuries. He remains in hospital in critical condition.

Northumbria Police has now confirmed that two men have been arrested. The driver of a Red Seat Leon, a 19-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The driver of the blue BMW 320 M Sport car, a 40-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

They have since been released under investigation while enquiries continue. A section of the A1 between Stannington Station and Seaton Burn was closed in both directions for around 16 hours and was reopened with lane closures in place. The force said it is not yet known how the three vehicles collided.

Five people were taken to hospital with head and body injuries, the ambulance service confirmed at the time. Officers are still keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the three vehicles in the moments prior, and anyone who has dash cam or CCTV footage from the area.
