Witnesses who saw black Mercedes urged to come forward in probe into PC Jess Turnbull death

Witnesses who may have seen a black Mercedes are being urged to come forward as the investigation into the death of PC Jess Turnbull continues. The 19-year-old Northumbria Police officer was responding to a crash on the A189 Spine Road [1] in Cramlington on Monday night.

While at the scene, Jess was outside of a marked police vehicle when she was struck by a car which was unconnected to the original incident. Jess was taken to hospital but sadly died on Wednesday surrounded by her loved ones.[2]

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to come forward who may have seen a 09-registered black Mercedes coupe CLC on Monday, between 3pm and about 11.30pm, in the Blyth, Cramlington and surrounding areas. The force has said it is extremely grateful to members of the public who stopped at the scene to assist and are also asking them to get in touch.

They would also like to hear from anyone with dashcam or CCTV of the moments leading up to the collision or of the 09-plate black Mercedes earlier in the day.

The officer leading the investigation, Sgt Dave Roberts from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Our thoughts very much remain with Jess's family, friends and all those impacted by this tragedy.

"We will continue to support her loved-ones during this extremely difficult time. Our investigation into the collision is ongoing and we are again appealing for anyone who may have information to come forward. Any information you may have could prove important, so please do contact police."

A 73-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving was taken to hospital and was later discharged.

He was subsequently further arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been bailed.

A flag at Northumbria Police's headquarters, in Wallsend, has been flying at half mast since the officer's death. On Friday, tributes and bouquets of flowers were left at the HQ.
