Woman in her 50s dies after A1 crash in Northumberland

Emergency services were called shortly after 4pm yesterday (June 22) after a two-vehicle crash on the major road near to Causey Park, in the Earsdon area of Northumberland. It is understood a grey BMW 5 Series car was travelling southbound when, for reasons yet to be established, it collided with a white Merecedes HGV which was travelling northbound. The passenger of the BMW, a woman in her 50s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Northumbria Police confirmed that her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. A section of the A1 between the A697 junction and the Acklington junction was closed in both directions for ten hours, but the road has since reopened. Officers from the force's serious collision investigation unit have now launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash and are appealing for witnesses, particularly with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

Sergeant Greg Huntley said: "Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who has sadly died in this tragic collision". "We will continue to offer them all the support they need and would ask that their privacy is respected at this time." Sgt Huntley added: "We are now appealing for further information and for anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicles involved, to come forward".

"If you were travelling in either direction on the A1 around the time of this collision, any information you are able to provide could prove crucial to our enquiries."
